Impromptu roadtrip! The other weekend we drove up to the Bay of Islands. At first I wasn't sure if the weather would be ok for photography, but it turned out mostly ok. Clouds in the sky are more interesting than just plain blue! On the way north we stopped at a couple of cafes, wasting a few dollars at one of the, and being satisfied at another. I fly into Whangarei fairly regularly, sometimes the approach is over Ruakaka, past Marsden Point and One Tree Point, all of which look quite interesting. I had never seen them for the ground, so this was our first detour off the highway north.
Leaving Whangarei we stopped at the Whangarei Falls. At this point it was raining, so I decided I'd be satisfied with just a shot from the top of the, rather than walking down to the bottom and getting soaked. As the day drew to a close, there was some lovely light shining across the rolling hills. The only problem here was trying to find a place to stop where you'd still get a shot! I managed one or two, but the location wasn't the best.
Paihia is lovely. The beaches are peaceful and look amazing. After a couple of sunset pictures, we checked into our hotel, which we were sharing with a group on a rally. My first thought was that I'd be kept up with noise all night, but it turned out to not be a problem. I was awoken by a Dodge Viper starting up in the morning, but I don't have any complaints about that.
My wife reluctantly joined me for some sunrise photos. It was cold. The sunrise was nice, but not the best for photos. After breakfast we caught the car ferry across the harbour and drove to Russell. More nice views and nice beaches! After Russell we continued east along the southern coast of the Bay of Islands, all the way out to Rawhiti. Plenty of winding roads for some spirited driving!
Heading south again, there are some lovely coastal scenes, and a cafe/gallery seemingly in the middle of nowhere. It was situated on the side of a hill, and offered a nice backdrop for drinking more coffee.
